What You Really Want

Selecting Ideas

Do you and your Parent Dress in the same style of Clothing?
Do you like the same Movies? Do you have the same Friends?
For most Seniors, the answers would be obvious.
But if you and your parents have such different tastes,
in so many things, how can you expect to take senior
portraits that both you and they will like. Then, put your
Grand Parents into it and how are you going to make
everyone happy. The answer is Variety. When seniors
think of portraits, they tend to think in terms of full
length poses that show off a skirt or pair of shoes or
they just like the look of portraits taken full length.

When parents select portraits, they want to see
your face as large as possible, which would be
a portrait done in a head and shoulder style (similar
to a yearbook pose). To make everyone happy,
you should select poses that are taken in a variety
of ways.

Outdoor portraits are another situation in that the way the portraits are taken, affects the look of the portraits. Usually seniors go to outdoor locations because of the beautiful scenes and backgrounds that exist. If portraits are taken in a head and shoulder style, you aren't going see much of the background or scene behind you. Seated posing or posing that is taken in a 3/4 length style often works best to increase the facial size, while showing at least some of the scene in front of and behind you. The photographer will always show you a variety of poses that you will be able to select from.

Expression is another aspect of the a portrait
that parents and seniors seem to disagree. While
parents and grandparents always want smiles,

especially guys like more serious expressions.
Expressions can make a big difference in the
look of the portrait. Again, the right expression
depends on who you are giving the portrait to.
A smile in a full length pose, can soften the look
of a portrait for family, while a relaxed, non smiling
pose can look more fashionable for friends at school.

In each idea, a variety of pose are taken. Once
in a while a senior and their parent agree, that only
smiling or non-smiling portraits should be taken. If this
case, please tell the photographer, so only the expressions
you want would be taken
