Parents need to Know

Senior Portraits have really changed since Parents did their senior photographs. There is no one idea, pose or background that every senior does anymore. The overwhelming majority of seniors today DON'T choose to do traditional ideas like the cap and gown, fur/felt wrap with pearls or a tux. But that doesn't mean they can't. (Both studios have a variety of Caps and Gowns, as well the wrap. The studio doesn't have tux's or pearls). If any of these classic idea are important to you or other family member, make sure that your son or daughter requests them to the photographer. If these ideas aren't requested they won't be done.

To make sure each senior is not inconvenienced by waiting after their appointed time, each senior's session start right on time. If a senior is late to their session, we will try to get them into a cancellation later in the day, which may or may not be available. Most of the time late seniors need to be rescheduled on another day. We ask that each senior be to the studio at least 15 minutes before the start of their session to select their backgrounds and poses, as well as completing all necessary paperwork.

In the portraits you see in the sample books there are many seniors with personal props, which range from sporting equipment to musical instruments, from "Tweetie" to a bible. All these items were brought in by the seniors. If your senior wants to include a personal prop, make sure they bring it in with them.

Some seniors decide to include another person in their session. While this can be done and there is no additional fee, it is limited to one other person. To have more than two people in one portrait requires more photographs be taken than comes with a normal session to insure that everyone in a larger group will have the proper expression. At this age, Boyfriends/Girlfriends tend to come and go, so it is best for your senior not to use more than one of their ideas on these type of friend portraits.

Many times ideas are not conveyed from the senior to the studio/photographer about a parent's wishes. For this reason, it is usually a good idea for one parent to come in with their senior. Only one person can accompany a senior through their session and at no time will children be permitted in the studio areas. Our main goal is to create a calm, relaxed environment so each senior will look their best. This can't happen will small children running around or babies crying, so it is best to make other arrangement for them during your appointment.

As you help your senior select the ideas they are doing, there are a few things to keep in mind. If a portrait is taken full length, the facial size is much smaller. We have had parents help their seniors select full length poses out of the sample books, only to complain about how small the face of their child is when they see their proofs. This sounds odd, but it is different when you are looking at a sample of another person and the exact same pose of your child.

Styles of dress, just like senior portraits are always changing. The things that seem to be disliked the most by parents are: (for guys) white under shirts showing under a polo shirt or when a dress shirt is worn without a tie and white socks showing with darker pants (for girls) tops that end just above the waistline, showing a portion of the mid-drift and dresses that are too short or low cut. We have no control over what is worn in your senior's session. We can only make suggestions, so if there is a questions about your senior's style of dress, discuss that with them before their session.

Another important thing to keep in mind is what retouching is and what problems it will take care of. Retouching is done to each pose that is ordered from (which are pose changes explained in your price list) and removes small blemishes from the face. RETOUCHING DOES NOT REMOVE OR FIX: bruises, large area skin problems or any blemishes other than on the face, bad hair days, wrinkled clothing, glass glare (get empty frame from your eye doctor) shine from skin, (caused by oils in the skin or astringents cleaners----use translucent powder) shine or reflections off hair or Braces. All problems other than blemishes on the face, require Artwork, which can be very expensive and is not included in any package or with any portrait.

We start informing seniors in our contracted high schools when they are still Juniors at the class presentation. Unfortunately, this information doesn't always get home to the parents. Because of the yearbook deadlines, it is best to take seniors portraits in June and July. While portraits are taken in August, it is a very busy time and with it so close to the deadline should your senior not like something in their session (bad hair day, clothing selected, Etc.), there may not be time to take more portraits before your school's deadline.

It is our goal to make sure that you, your family and your senior get exactly what you want out of your senior's session. Should you have any questions, call the studio and the staff will help you.
